A review of the Xfce variant of Ubuntu known as Xubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelot. Overall, a very lightweight, stable, well-performing distribution that utilises GTK 3 but still provides a user experience very similar to GNOME 2.x. Definitely a very nice option for anyone sick of ‘futuristic and newbie friendly desktops’.

A review of openSUSE 12.1 in all it’s KDE 4.7 and Gnome 3.2 fanciness. Overall this system is technologically advanced but brings this technology into the realm of the desktop user. Fantastic btrfs integration, snapshot functionality, remote administration, rolling release support all compliment the latest iterations of desktop environments and apps including KDE 4.7, Gnome 3.2, Xfce 4.8, LXDE, Firefox 7, LibreOffice 3.4, and much more.

Definitely recommended for the power user, and also one who wants to learn what Linux is capable of.

A review of the much-anticipated Linux Mint 12 ‘Lisa’ operating system. Overall, this distribution bridges a wide gap between the traditional desktop interface, and the future desktop of Gnome 3. Top of the line open-source applications with custom Mint tools make for a very nice, albeit limited, user experience.

I like the direction that Linux Mint 12 is headed, but there are still some implementation tweaks that need to be made in both Gnome 3′s Mint Gnome Shell Extensions (MGSE) and the Gnome 2 fork MATE desktop environment.

Linux refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating systems using the Linux kernel. FreeBSD is a free Unix-like operating system descended from AT&T UNIX via BSD UNIX. An in-depth look at Fedora 15 Lovelock, sporting the new stable GNOME 3 desktop and GNOME Shell. Fedora is a well supported distribution, and the fusion of GNOME Shell and Fedora’s base creates an innovative, modern and polished desktop for the Linux enthusiast and power user. Definitely a great peek into the future of desktop Linux and it’s a substantially widget base than GNOME and GTK 2.x.
Very polished, and arguably much better (think finished) than Unity.

A review of the Enlightenment E17 distro called Bodhi Linux. Built upon the stable Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, this ultralight distribution is a great choice for older computers. Only basic tools are preinstalled, but a great community website makes it easy to download/install the best Linux apps available. So lightweight, you could run it on a tablet or mobile phone even!
