Friday, January 20th, 2012

0 Xubuntu 11.10 Review Linux Distro ReviewsA review of the Xfce variant of Ubuntu known as Xubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelot. Overall, a very lightweight, stable, well-performing distribution that utilises GTK 3 but still provides a user experience very similar to GNOME 2.x. Definitely a very nice option for anyone sick of ‘futuristic and newbie friendly desktops’.

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

0 openSUSE 12.1 Review Linux Distro ReviewsA review of openSUSE 12.1 in all it’s KDE 4.7 and Gnome 3.2 fanciness. Overall this system is technologically advanced but brings this technology into the realm of the desktop user. Fantastic btrfs integration, snapshot functionality, remote administration, rolling release support all compliment the latest iterations of desktop environments and apps including KDE 4.7, Gnome 3.2, Xfce 4.8, LXDE, Firefox 7, LibreOffice 3.4, and much more.

Definitely recommended for the power user, and also one who wants to learn what Linux is capable of.

Linux Mint 12 Review – Linux Distro Reviews

Monday, November 28th, 2011

0 Linux Mint 12 Review Linux Distro ReviewsA review of the much-anticipated Linux Mint 12 ‘Lisa’ operating system. Overall, this distribution bridges a wide gap between the traditional desktop interface, and the future desktop of Gnome 3. Top of the line open-source applications with custom Mint tools make for a very nice, albeit limited, user experience.

I like the direction that Linux Mint 12 is headed, but there are still some implementation tweaks that need to be made in both Gnome 3′s Mint Gnome Shell Extensions (MGSE) and the Gnome 2 fork MATE desktop environment.

Let me know what you think below!

FreeBSD Vs. Linux – TechTV 02/09/2003

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

0 FreeBSD Vs. Linux TechTV 02/09/2003http://www.freebsd.org/ — http://www.linuxfoundation.org/
Linux refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating systems using the Linux kernel. Linux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers and video game consoles, to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world.
The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian (and its derivatives such as Ubuntu), Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting utilities and libraries to fulfill the distribution’s intended use.

FreeBSD is a free Unix-like operating system descended from AT&T UNIX via BSD UNIX. Although for legal reasons FreeBSD cannot be called “UNIX,” as the direct descendant of BSD UNIX (many of whose original developers became FreeBSD developers), FreeBSD’s internals and system APIs are UNIX-compliant, and thanks to its permissive licensing terms, much of FreeBSD’s code base has become an integral part of other operating systems such as Mac OS X that have subsequently been certified as UNIX-compliant and have formally received UNIX branding. With the exception of the proprietary Mac OS X, FreeBSD is the most widely used BSD-derived operating system in terms of number of installed computers, and is the most widely used freely licensed, open-source BSD distribution, accounting for more than three quarters of all installed systems running free, open-source BSD derivatives.
FreeBSD is a complete operating system; the kernel, device drivers, and all of the userland utilities, such as the shell, are held in the same source code revision tracking tree. (This is in contrast to Linux distributions, for which the kernel, userland utilities, and applications are developed separately, and then packaged together in various ways by others.) Third-party application software may be installed using various software installation systems, the two most common being source installation and package installation, both of which use the FreeBSD Ports system.

Fedora 15 Review – Linux Distro Reviews

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

0 Fedora 15 Review Linux Distro ReviewsAn in-depth look at Fedora 15 Lovelock, sporting the new stable GNOME 3 desktop and GNOME Shell. Fedora is a well supported distribution, and the fusion of GNOME Shell and Fedora’s base creates an innovative, modern and polished desktop for the Linux enthusiast and power user. Definitely a great peek into the future of desktop Linux and it’s a substantially widget base than GNOME and GTK 2.x.
Very polished, and arguably much better (think finished) than Unity.
