Have Your Own Blogs? Promote or Be Promoted!

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Beginning early this year, certain search engine made some changes to their search ranking,   in the hope of furnishing it’s search users better results, on official google blog it is estimated 11.8% search results will be affected by this update, say it another way, google thinks about 12% of it’s search results are really bad and need to manipulated. They planned and started the update about one year ago, no wonder I saw a few of my keywords’ ranks dropped like a rock, on the other hand almost all keywords promoted by contextual links are not affected, a few of these keywords ranked better than ever, it becomes clear that link building the old way is the thing of past, probably due to link spamming sites being de-indexed by google.

What is old way of link building any way? a large percentage of SEO firms will do this,  they will get links from any websites which accept adding links, these websites will only be updated when new links are being added, and most of them are useless, the name link spamming are just for these sites. Now google algorithm probably will weed out these sites, all the links on those websites will have the same fate.

Maybe a few examples will make it clear. When I got into online marketing long time ago, I needed to rank the keyword, Load Binders, it was old way of link building all the way, a lot of sites I used had too many links, and the worst thing is that those sites are linking sites only and had no content, not even crap content. This strategy worked in the beginning, finally the rank improved a lot, the party was over when google updated it’s algorithm. Something opposite happened to this keyword, chain pullers, we promoted this keyword with articles and blog posts, not too many plain links have been built, you can imagine how this keyword ranks. Old and outdated linking campaign lost to content linking, what’s next? In fact the only thing matters here is content, so if you create great content, your rank will improve over time, since search engines are another kind of readers. How do you do it? Writing articles and building blogs, take a look at this blog, sherri hill , I build it as a hobby and kept adding good or mediocre content, I guess you believe this site won’t be doing too well, in reality this site is doing pretty well for more than a few search terms. As far as SEO concerned, creating quality content and blog marketing is what we have to do to get great result. Now imagine you have your own blog network, such as Tow Chain, then it will be easier to do article marketing.

Bottom line is that you should create great content, get people to enjoy and share your stuff, promote your business with the content, this strategy will prevail in short or long term. Persistence and patience are the keys to success, long term strategy is required to improve anything of significance, it doesn’t matter you’re doing SEO or advertising your business, now all we have to do is to give our love for creating and sharing quality content and not to worry about the ranking all the time. One of the best articles directories is EzineArticle, google will index a new article on ezine promptly, popular blogs will get your post indexed as soon as you post it, I believe you should see for yourself, for instance, Machine Chains , nice writing, good content, published on popular site, all these points make it perfect for SEO.

Last but not least, the social media is the must have channel for your marketing effort. For wordpress blogs, I recommend twitter tools, sign up for a twitter account and create a new application, set up API credentials in your twitter tools option, then every new post on your blog will show up in your twitter page, it’s real easy and useful, if you don’t use this tool it’s just too bad.

Class Notes

Introduction
Linux was created by Linus Torvalds between 1991 and 1994
Linux is not a version of Unix
Distributions
Once Linux was released to the public numerous institutions created their own versions of the operating system. These different versions are called Distributions, or Distros. Different Distros have different functionality.
Open Source software is not necessarily free software
Make sure you understand the licensing requirements for your Open Source software before you release it into a Production Environment.
Defining The Shell
The Shell is the interface you use to interact with the Operating System. Windows uses a GUI (Graphical User Interface) Shell, Linux primarily uses a LUI (Line User Interface)
ROOT
ROOT is the highest level of anything in the Linux world. ROOT user is the highest level user. The ROOT directory s the highest level directory.
Capitalization matters in Linux (HOME is different then home)
Server vs. Desktop Versions
Server versions of Linux install the bare minimum number of components for the system to function. After installation you will be faced with a blinking cursor.
Desktop versions of Linux come prepackaged with a GUI environment and numerous tools and applications. After installation you will be presented with an environment that looks a lot like Windows or the Mac OS.
What Linux is really god for?
Linux is great for server functionality
Linux is still poor for every day desktop functionality for most users.

Build and Maintain Your Blog Network Is Essential For Any Business

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Google made big changes to the ways their search results rank,   in the hope of furnishing it’s search users better results, google engineers published blog post which indicated there were 11.8% organic search results will be affected, put it this way, almost 12% of google search results are useless or of low quality. They planned and started the update about one year ago, and recently I see some of my ranks were lowered considerably, on the other hand almost all keywords promoted by contextual links are not affected, some of the keywords even ranked better than before, it’s safe to say that old way of link building is doomed.

Now what on earth is plain link building and how do people do it? a lot of marketing companies did and are doing the plain link building, they put your links on websites which only exist for holding links, these websites will only be updated when new links are being added, almost all of them are garbage, the name of link spamming sites is justified. The latest google update will definitely downgrade most if not all of these sites, all the links on those websites will have the same fate.

Examples will be great for explanation. When I got into online marketing long time ago, I started with this keyword, Grade 30 Chains, it was old way of link building all the way, lately I figured that every site in the campaign had way too many links, worst yet, those sites had no content at all. In the beginning, the ranking of the keyword in question rise pretty fast, eventually the keyword could be found on first page, this was the case until google made the change. Now let’s look at another keyword, chain pullers, most back links for this keyword are from articles and posts, not too many plain links have been built, now we have really good ranking for this keyword. Now contextual links win the battle, then what? In fact the only thing matters here is content, as long as you dole out high quality content, not only people will love to read your stuff, so do the search engines. It’s never too late to build good blogs for business purpose, such as this interesting blog, best baby strollers , I build it as a hobby and kept adding good or mediocre content, the result? I got nice ranking for a few realy nice keywords now. As we can see, quality blog marketing is much better than plain link building. Now imagine you have your own blog network, such as Grade 70 Chain, then it will be easier to do article marketing.

At the end of day all you need to do is to create quality content, share the content with people, and put your keywords in the context you’re good to go, this strategy will prevail in short or long term. Whatever you do, you will need persistence and patience, you shouldn’t expect things to improve overnight, it doesn’t matter you’re doing SEO or advertising your business, keep doing what we have to do till the end of world. Ezine is one of the best article directories out there, a new article will be indexed and cached in less than an hour, popular blogs will get your post indexed as soon as you post it, I believe you should see for yourself, take Load Binders as an example, nice writing, good content, published on popular site, this article is a good example of article marketing.

Last but not least, if you don’t take social media account, you’re lost. One thing you can do for your blogs is to install twitter tools, get a twitter account and API keys, configure your twitter tools prpperly, you should choose to post a tweet for every new post, it’s simple and elegant, no one should miss this tool out.

Linux Device Drivers: Some Myths and Facts

http://www.pcauthorities.com/drivers/linux-device-drivers-some-myths-and-facts/

Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using OSS

http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/chap_01.html

The Linux Desktop is currently a mess with a plethora of options available. Unity as on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3 as on Fedora 16 are cluttered and in my opinion not suitable for use on a production machine. I need a Desktop Environment that allows me to just get things done with minimal fuss. This is where the older Gnome 2 Desktop Environment excels.

Linux Mint 12 goes some way to addressing this wth MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) which is a layer built on top of GNOME 3 however like other distros. such as Fedora to deploy the GNOME 3 Desktop Environment for me does not convince

Linux Desktop Faceoff GNOME 3 vs Ubuntu Unity

There is a new project being developed by Linux Mint called Cinnamon however as with MGSE it is a layer built on top of GNOME 3

I thoroughly recommend the earlier release Linux Mint 11 which is built upon Ubuntu 11.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 11 then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint 11 can also be run straight from the LiveDVD without touching your Hard Drive

Linux Mint 11 has a feature called mint4win which is almost identical

What type of linux system is good to develop php websites on?

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

And what Linux System is popular and best in general

They are all good for dev, however given the popularity, Ubuntu or Fedora would be the way to go (as most of the premium IDE’s have specially developed their software for Ubuntu/Fedora)

Cheers,

David

ps – I personally wouldn’t go with the latest version, I haven’t liked the 11+ series (I run 10.10 x64)

For my first episode I compare Linux vs Windows! Watch me tackle my favorite alternative for those using Microsoft Windows: Linux Mint. For the vast majority of desktop & laptop computer users, Linux Mint is a great switch from the proprietary (and expensive!) Windows… but not always.

A Cheap Computer Solution

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

0 A Cheap Computer SolutionMany systems now adays run $1,000+ for good performance. You don’t have to spend that kind of money for a solid machine. You can just buy off of eBay (or similar such site) cheap, low end hardware, and put Linux on it. Some Linux distributions have been specifically built for these low end systems (the Lite Distributions), and therefore will fly on this low spec hardware. Plus, you save yourself a great deal of money that would otherwise be invested in things like virus protection and Microsoft Office, since Linux comes with everything a home user would need right out of the box.
