how do i set my asus linux based laptop keyboard layout to dvorak?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

I have a asus laptop hat is running the origonal linux and i want to switch to dvorak and i can move the keyfaces around but it still thinks they are in qwerty possions.

You should be able to find some place in the menu that will let you change things like the keyboard, language ,etc.
If you can’t the commands in this link will work in the terminal.
Good luck

I can’t get my Linux system to accept proprietary drivers for my ATI graphics card; any suggestions?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

It had worked fine before on the same Linux System, but I took off the system to briefly install XP to update the bios—and since then, it will only use the open source drivers. The bios update is the correct one, by the way; I was certain to check it well before upgrading.

I have tried everything I can think of, but it positively will not use the proprietary drivers. Any suggestions?

My first question on Answers (more than 4 years ago) was a computer question. I didn’t get one answer. This site really isn’t very good at answering real questions.

Anyway, I’m thinking on giving up on linux. I’ve been installing various flavors of linux on several computers during the past five years. I’ve never had a seamless installation. I’ve had driver issues (usually caused by hardware manufactures not providing up-to-date drivers, of course), software glitches (slow clocks, buggy sound, buggy video, etc.), and harder-to-install software installations (utilities required for my line of work).

Now, the hardware drivers are usually not linux’s fault, but I don’t care why something doesn’t work. I care about how quickly I can be productive and/or entertained. I don’t want to spend too much time on something I can avoid.

I rarely have problems with Windows (never had a virus, either). So, why not stay with Windows?

Can ubuntu linux work on any Computer and can it work on any Computer hardware?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Whith newer computer hardware and premade PC’s coming out every so often these days can ubuntu linux work. or do you need spasifik computer or hardware to run it. TY

Ubuntu can be run on virtually all computers still in service. However, the system will need to meet Ubuntu’s system requirements, which are pretty low. Not all hardware works with Linux, but most does. It is not limited to any specific type or model of computer.

Part 1 – The Well Tempered Hacker: Supermicro AMD Hardware with Xen Linux Virtual Machines

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

2 Part 1 The Well Tempered Hacker: Supermicro AMD Hardware with Xen Linux Virtual MachinesIn this episode we take a look at a dual AMD Supermicro machine with 32 Gigs of RAM and 9 hard drives. We create a RAID5 volume in software with 8 1TB drives and use LVM to slice that into logical volumes for xen virtual machines. We also take a look at the remote management capabilities of the system and see how you would rarely need to be near this machine to manage it!

What is the best way to back up files if I want to access them with linux running laptop later?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

I have an old laptop that will die soon- it is running xp. I want to back up my mp3/photos/word/ppt documents. I may need the applications if my old laptop is still usable, but I really just want to be able to transfer my photos/mp3 etc files to the new laptop running linux. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking portable external HD, but how to do this?

Hello,

Connect your laptops using RJ-45 cable.

On your Linux Laptop browse the windows share using the following tip.

Press ALT+F2. On the Run window give smb://<windows_IP>/<share_name>

Your windows share will be opened. You can simply drag and drop to your linux folder

How do I find out the windows manager installed on my Linux system?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

I have a Linux System installed with Fedora Core 5. I want to know which windows manager I’m currently using (GNOME,KDE?). How can I find that out?

when you first log in it should say KDE 3.x or GNOME 2.x in the middle of the screen. if that doesn’t help, KDE has just one taskbar, by default, at the bottom of the screen. GNOME has one at the top and one at the bottom

How do you install drivers for your hardware on Linux?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

I have Gentoo and I love it except I can’t connect to the internet. I have a Dell laptop 100L Latitude (hey! It was practically free). I am feeling rather slow so a really good website would be really helpful (Like "Installing drivers on Gentoo for Dummies" sort of thing) Or if it isn’t as hard as it feels like right now and you can just explain it- that would be good too. icon biggrin How do you install drivers for your hardware on Linux?

It might be in your best interest to an easier distro to start off with gentoo is great but not for beginners.
as far as the net not working could be a network connection not set I have had this a few times on some distros. Any ubuntu based distro is a much better choice for a newbie I hope your time with linux is good but it might be less then you hope for with gentoo this early in the game.

how do i connect my linux laptop to the internet through a another computer with a bigpond WIFI router?

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

how do i connect my Linux Laptop to the internet through a another computer with a bigpond WIFI router (its not a network group and never will be)?

Your question doesn’t make sense and there is not enough information.

The answer will depend on what ‘flavor’ of linux you are using (ubuntu, BSD, redhat).

If there is a WI-FI router AND you have a working wireless card in your linux box then you DONT need to ‘connect through a another computer’.

If you DONT have a wireless card then just connect directly to the router.

If you cannot do the above and the other computer is running Windows then you can use what is called "Internet Connection Sharing".
